My mother was a teacher. She taught English and Drama in High School and Public Speaking in college. My father was a business man. He was a stock broker for many years. Later in life, he was part owner of an organization that helped prepare students for the TOEFL exam Test of English as a Foreign Language. He died when I was 18 and the family sold out the practice. I have taught Public Speaking in college and for working adults in Continuing Education. I am thinking of starting a service in which I would help English as a Second Language professionals in public speaking and presentation skills. I am thinking that my students, and clients, would be ESL professionals in various fields that have been promoted into training and management and now have to train others and want to improve their communications and public speaking skills. The students already know how to speak English. However, they lack confidence in speaking in groups and training others because of a foreign accent or they need more proficiency in mastering English and using conversational English. I have thought of starting several Continuing and Adult Education courses at colleges and high schools in my area. From there, I could see if there is a market to bring in clients for additional help and from there start a part-time service oriented business as a Communications Consultant. Not sure if there is enough demand out there to go full time as a business or not. Do you have any suggestions as to how I would go about developing this business service from an adult education course, to a part time service, to a full time private practice as a consultant? Do you have any suggestions or other organizations to approach, besides continuing education programs at high schools and colleges to see if there is an interest in my services?
